<p><strong><em>Poem for June 12</em></strong><em><br />
</em><br />
I began at 2:00 A.M.<br />
and chanted slowly even though<br />
I took some ginseng. It was<br />
not topmost<em> japa</em>, but you<br />
counted them forever all<br />
syllables and the mind fixed<br />
on <em>nama</em>. You finished<br />
late.</p>
<p>Lord Caitanya is speaking nectarean verses to Sanatana<br />
in “Life’s Ultimate Goal.”<br />
“O Govinda, this youthful<br />
girl named Radhika is today<br />
constantly pouring forth tears like<br />
nectar from flowers as<br />
She sings Your name in a<br />
sweet voice.&#8221;</p>
<p>“O Krishna, O flute player, the<br />
sweetness of Your early age is<br />
wonderful. You know My unsteadiness<br />
and I know Yours. No one else knows<br />
about this. I want to see Your beautiful<br />
attractive face somewhere in a solitary<br />
place but how can this be accomplished?”<br />
These are the apex of <em>rasika slokas</em><br />
between Radha and Krishna and to<br />
hear them purifies the heart.</p>
<p>Narayana was polite and<br />
gentlemanly while I chanted my<br />
rounds. He applied eye drops and<br />
massaged my head with lotion.<br />
I told him yesterday was<br />
New York City Ratha-yatra.<br />
He said today is Pandava-<br />
nirjala Ekadasi. We<br />
don’t strictly follow all<br />
the injunctions. In<br />
Krishna-Balarama <em>mandir</em> they<br />
don’t cook on this day.<br />
A migraneur can’t do<br />
severe fasting, and Prabhupada<br />
never followed it.<br />
Just observe a grainless<br />
Ekadasi lunch and prepare for the autobiog.<br />
I’m reading <em>Journal and Poems</em><br />
which is old-fashioned<br />
preaching when I was a<br />
frontline GBC-guru<br />
defending the<br />
ISKCON movement.</p>
<p>The poem rocks<br />
and rolls with music<br />
and sounds in an easy<br />
way. It makes us<br />
wake up to improvised<br />
phrases and we want<br />
to see Krishna there.<br />
He is in the horns<br />
and the free space<br />
I contend, and<br />
you can hear it from me.<br />
It rolls sweet like surf on<br />
the beach. The trees are<br />
all lush green and the<br />
flowers are in no danger<br />
of frost. It’s all His<br />
creation, and we can<br />
see him in His<br />
energies. He stands<br />
in the clearing, and Radha<br />
sees Him and chants<br />
His holy name, stunned.</p>

<p><strong><em>Poem for June<sup> </sup>7 </em></strong></p>
<p>I woke late, after 3:00,<br />
and rushed into my rounds, was<br />
still chanting when Narayana came<br />
up, dispatched them before 5:00<br />
not in the highest consciousness.</p>
<p>Vidura was qualified to inquire from<br />
Maitreya. He was Yamaraja in a former<br />
birth but was cursed by a sage. Yamaraja<br />
said the sage should be pierced with a<br />
lance because he pierced an ant as a child.<br />
The sage thought this punishment was too<br />
severe and cursed Yamaraja to take birth as<br />
a <em>sudra</em>. But it turned out well for<br />
Yamaraja, who was born as the son of<br />
Vyasadeva, wed to a <em>sudra</em> maidservant.<br />
He got all the benefit of being raised<br />
in the royal Kuru family, but<br />
unlike Duryodhana and company, he<br />
became a great devotee of Krishna and<br />
the Pandavas. He didn’t ask Maitreya<br />
to first talk of the <em>gopis</em> but inquired<br />
into the nature of creation.  This is<br />
connected to Krishna-<em>katha</em> because Govinda<br />
is <em>sarva-karana-karanam</em>,<br />
the cause of all causes. Maitreya<br />
had been unsure where to begin,<br />
but taking this hint from Vidura<br />
he began speaking on the <em>purusa-<br />
avataras<span style="text-decoration:underline;">.</span></em></p>
<p>Narayana worked quickly so I<br />
could get back to my <em>japa,</em> but<br />
we discussed the improvement in his<br />
back and the fact that he had<br />
gotten up early and finished most<br />
of his rounds. And we<br />
discussed how Baladeva had<br />
done all of his shopping yesterday<br />
including getting the seven-foot-<br />
tall cedar fence to block out<br />
our neighbors’ barbecue<br />
and sunbathing scene.</p>
<p>I’ve summarized seven fiction<br />
books for my autobiog., and now<br />
I’ll attempt some genre-<br />
benders like <em>Under Dark<br />
Stars</em>.<br />
Writing about my books as autobiog. is natural because<br />
they are the most important<br />
part of my life, as much as<br />
managing on the GBC<br />
or being true to Prabhupada.</p>
<p>The poem is lively<br />
filled with the song<br />
of the instrumentalists.<br />
They blow and I play<br />
Krishna-centered thoughts<br />
over them. I offer<br />
incense to Radha-Govinda<br />
and pray to Them to bless<br />
me with the <em>bhava</em><br />
for the Divine Couple.<br />
I don’t travel to festivals<br />
but come to my Deities<br />
and to my writing and<br />
<em>japa </em>as service<br />
performed in the<br />
<em>sankirtana </em>movement of<br />
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.</p>

<p><strong><em>Poem for June 10</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em> </em></strong></p>
<p><strong><em></em></strong>I became wide awake by 9:30 P.M.<br />
and took meds to go back to sleep.<br />
But at 10:30 I had a headache and<br />
had to subdue it. By 1:30 I got up from<br />
bed and started chanting. It was not<br />
<em>yugala-kishora</em> but counting and hearing<br />
the names like my pulse-beat. I<br />
finished before 4:00 when Narayana<br />
came up and told me he had a<br />
pretty much sleepless night under<br />
pressure of papers and letters<br />
he has to write.</p>
<p>In the process of creation the<br />
last finishing touch is the<br />
glance of the Lord. It goes<br />
from subtle to gross. For<br />
example, the sky is the cause<br />
of air. The sky has only one<br />
quality, sound, but by the<br />
interaction of the sky and the<br />
glance of the Lord, the air<br />
is produced which has two qualities,<br />
sound and touch. Then<br />
electricity and then water<br />
is produced. In the last<br />
stage of physical development<br />
the result is earth, which has<br />
all five qualities, sound, touch,<br />
form, taste, and odor.<br />
They do not take place<br />
automatically but under the supervision<br />
of the Lord. Those who cannot see<br />
the hidden hand of the Lord are<br />
certainly less intelligent although they<br />
may be advertised as great material<br />
scientists.</p>
<p>The poetry moves with a<br />
beat. It’s directed free<br />
writing on Krishna, the all-<br />
pervading Truth. He<br />
reaches into all corners<br />
of the universe. It’s<br />
a sweet melody with<br />
a vocalist. She sings<br />
sounds without words<br />
and augments the horns<br />
eerily. Krishna is the<br />
center because His<br />
glance is required before<br />
anything can come about.<br />
Any one of His senses<br />
acts for the others.<br />
He can procreate with<br />
His eyes, He can eat<br />
by hearing, He’s omnipotent,<br />
the Supreme Person in<br />
the center of the storm,<br />
in the heart of this song.</p>

<p><strong><em>Poem for June 11th</em></strong><em><br />
</em><br />
You woke up past two<br />
a late start on <em>japa</em> bouncing<br />
them wide-awake but not<br />
concentrated. Still chanting when<br />
Narayana came up. I told him<br />
it’s a luxury that he’s here. He<br />
said he’s trying to preach his<br />
duties by writing letters.</p>
<p>Krishnadasa Kaviraja inserts verses<br />
from the scriptures and words spoken<br />
directly by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu<br />
which later appeared verbatim<br />
in the Goswamis’ books. Thus<br />
He spoke: <em>adau sraddha tatah<br />
sadhu sanga: </em>In the beginning there<br />
must be faith. Then one becomes<br />
interested in associating with devotees .  .  .<br />
Gradually emotions intensify and<br />
finally there is an awakening of love.<br />
This is the gradual development of love of<br />
Godhead for the devotee interested<br />
in Krishna consciousness. (BRS 1.4.15-16)<br />

The poem rises to a pitch<br />
and I go with it. Each morning we hear the<br />
music and weave it into<br />
the lines of poesy focused<br />
on Krishna. He accepts<br />
the offering I believe because it is done sincerely<br />
with the rhythmic tune.<br />
Krishna is the Cowherd Boy<br />
who plays the flute<br />
which bewilders the <em>gopis </em><br />
and all those who hear<br />
it so He knows music<br />
and how to play it. He is the King of Music<br />
and can be the recipient<br />
of a musical offering<br />
in His name if<br />
it is done with<br />
consummate skill<br />
and swing. This<br />
morning I did it, confident and humble.<br />
I go out on a limb<br />
and claim it’s<br />
a kind of <em>kirtana</em><br />
because it’s so charming.</p>

<p><strong>‘If one chants without trying to give up offenses, the real creeper of <em>bhakti</em> will be stunted by the unwanted creepers of sense gratification, etc.</strong></p>

<p>“[Lord Caitanya to Rupa Gosvami] When a person receives the seed of devotional service he should take care of it by becoming a gardener and sowing the seed in his heart. if he waters the seed gradually by the process of <em>sravana</em> and <em>kirtana</em> (hearing and chanting), the seed will begin to sprout…The gardener must defend the creeper by fencing it all around so that the powerful elephant of offenses may not enter. Sometimes unwanted creepers such as the creeper of desires for material enjoyment and liberation from the material world, grow along with the creeper of devotional service. The varieties of such unwanted creepers are unlimited. Some unnecessary creepers growing along with the <em>bhakti</em> creeper are the creepers of behavior unacceptable for those trying to attain perfection, diplomatic behavior, animal killing, mundane profiteering, mundane adoration, and mundane importance. All these are unwanted creepers if one does not distinguish between the <em>bhakti-lata</em> creeper and the other creepers, the sprinkling of water is misused because the other creepers are nourished while the <em>bhakti-lata</em> creeper is curtailed.” (<em>Sri Caitanya Caritamrta</em>, Madhya-lila, 19.152,157-60)</p>
<p>In gardening when one waters flowers or plants he also waters weeds and the weeds grow up with the desirable flowers. So a gardener has to scrupulously pull out the weeds. Similarly in chanting as one invest in chanting, if he does so with offenses, weeds will grow. There are byproducts or benefits that come with chanting which are actually materialistic or unwanted. Deviant behaviors spring up when one chants Hare Krishna if he does not do so strictly. These are mentioned in the verse of <em>Caitanya Caritamrta</em>. Basically what happens is that one becomes materially attached to sense gratification. He may become victimized by diplomatic or crooked behavior or may associate with women for illicit sex. One may consider a Vaisnava to belong to a mundane caste or creed and think, “This is a Hindu Vaisnava and this is a European Vaisnava. A European Vaisnava is not allowed to enter the temples.” In other words he thinks of a Vaisnava in terms of birth thinking one a <em>brahmana-vaisnava</em> and one a <em>sudra-vaisnava</em> or <em>mleccha-vaisnava</em> and so on. One may also try to become a cheap Vaisnava by chanting in a secluded place for material adoration. All these are just ways to cheat innocent people and make a show of advanced spiritual life to become known as a <em>sadhu</em> or religious person. All these are signs that weeds have grown up along with the process of chanting and the so-called devotee has become victimized and the real creeper of <em>bhakti-lata-bhija</em> has been stunted.</p>
<p>I had a difficult morning for headaches. I woke with a slight headache and took some medicine. But after a while the headache was still present and I took more medicine. The headache didn’t go down but moved into my right eye and became a migraine headache. I had to take migraine medicine and the headache remained for my whole chanting period. But like yesterday it did not affect the pace of my chanting. I was wide awake and chanted without being slowed down by drowsiness. My attention however was not the best. My mind wandered to different things which may have been due to the physical impairment. I could not concentrate fully on the meanings of Hare and Krishna. But I took solace in the fact that I was chanting alertly. I began chanting by 1:30 and finished sixteen rounds by 3:30.</p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;">In offensive <em>japa</em>,<br />
weeds grow up beside<br />
the plant of devotional service.<br />
There are many kinds of<br />
unwanted creepers and one<br />
has to strive to pull them up,<br />
or build a fence around the<br />
garden so the offenses<br />
will not brake in.<br />
Even when one chants<br />
quickly on a good morning<br />
the mind may flit off<br />
and dwell on different<br />
topics, like a bee buzzing<br />
into different flowers.<br />
You have to quiet<br />
the restless mind by<br />
gaining presence and<br />
gravity and concentrating<br />
on the meaning of the<br />
Hare Krishna mantra.<br />
Otherwise you are guilty<br />
of inattentive chanting,<br />
the root of other<br />
offenses. Chant<br />
and hear nicely<br />
as the hours go by.</p>

<p>I turned at random to <em>Srimad-Bhagavatam</em>, Canto 1, Chapter 19, verse 36:</p>
<p>“Otherwise [without being inspired by Lord Krishna] how is it that you have voluntarily appeared here, though you are moving incognito to the common man and are not visible to us who are on the verge of death?” Sukadeva Goswami was inspired by Lord Krishna to appear voluntarily before Maharaja Pariksit, the great devotee, just to give him the teachings of <em>Srimad-Bhagavatam.</em> There were other sages and gurus present suggesting different paths, but it was not conclusive who Maharaja Pariksit would listen to. When Sukadeva Goswami arrived, everyone stood up, and it was decided that (although he was only 16 years old) Sukadeva was the most qualified devotee present to teach Pariksit in his last remaining seven days. The other sages gave Sukadeva deference, and Maharaja Pariksit turned eagerly to hear from him. One can achieve the import of devotional service of the Lord by the mercy of the spiritual master and the Personality of Godhead. The spiritual master is the manifest representative of the Lord to help one achieve ultimate success.</p>
<p>A bona-fide guru is actually inspired by the Lord to appear before the disciple. As soon as a true representative of the Lord is met by a devotee, the devotee is assured for going back to Godhead. But this depends on the sincerity of the devotee himself. In a similar case in the<em> Bhagavatam</em>, Narada Muni was sent to appear before Dhruva Maharaja, who was searching for God in the forest. When the Lord finds a person who is eager to go back to Godhead, He sends His bona-fide representative. In the purport, Srila Prabhupada writes, “The conclusion is that to get the assistance and help of a bona-fide spiritual master means <em>to receive the direct help of the Lord Himself</em>.” (<em>Bhag.</em> 1.19.36, purport)</p>
<p>It’s sweet how Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu interacts with His devotees. About 300 of them came from Bengal for the four months at Caturmasya and stayed with Him at Jagannatha-puri. The Puri devotees are always with Him. One year there was an incident where Sivananda Sena was delayed paying a toll. The whole group of Bengali devotees had to wait for him under a tree. He arranged for all their eating and accommodations, and so without him they had to simply wait. Lord Nityananda became angry and claimed that He was hungry. He cursed Sivananda Sena and said that his sons should die. Sivananda Sena’s wife started weeping and wailing. When Sivananda Sena finally arrived, his wife at once told him of Lord Nityananda’s curse. Sivananda Sena called her a foolish woman and said they should be glad to be cursed by Lord Nityananda. Lord Nityananda then came up to Sivananda Sena and kicked him on the leg. Who could understand the ways of Lord Nityananda? Krishna dasa Kaviraja says when Lord Nityananda is angry towards someone He is actually showing them His affection. Sivananda Sena was aware of this, and he was pleased to be kicked by Lord Nityananda. Nor did He actually cause Sivananda Sena’s sons to die. But He is an <em>avadhuta</em> and acts in contradictory ways. One of the devotees left the party and went ahead to complain about Lord Nityananda’s behavior, but when he came into Lord Caitanya’s presence, he sensed that Lord Caitanya was omniscient and knew why he was upset, so he did not complain about Lord Nityananda. Lord Caitanya spoke nectarean words to His devotees when they arrived. He pointed out that they underwent great trouble to travel to see Him, and He expressed his affection to each of them. He chided Lord Nityanada for coming because He had ordered Him to stay in Nadia and preach. Each year they observe the same festivals, and <em>kirtanas</em> and  feasting and Krishna<em> katha</em>. Lord Caitanya enjoyed their company in the day, but He passed His night in great difficulty fee­­ling separation from Krishna and sharing His emotions with His associates Ramananda Raya and Svarupa Damodara.</p>
<p>I breathe in the pastimes in an even-tempered way. May they stay in my mind, and may I speak about them to the devotees. When you dip deeply into the pastimes of Lord Caitanya in the Ganges River, you come up in Radha-Kunda in the pastimes of Radha-Krishna. The more you have qualified to relish Gauranga-<em>lila</em>, the more you become eligible to hear of the Divine Couple of Vraja.</p>
<p>Krishna is neither impersonal or unable to reciprocate the feelings of His devotees. In <em>Bhagavad-gita</em> (4.11) He says, “As they approach Me, I respond accordingly.” He reciprocates with different devotees just as it behooves their mood in approach to Him. When He arrived in Dvaraka, he was met by dramatists, artists, singers, historians, genealogists and learned speakers, and they each gave Him their respective contributions. The Lord responded with the specific admirers according to His specific relationship with them. But the pure devotees were of one type only because they have no other object of service but the Lord. To some He bowed His head, to some He exchanged greetings, to some He shook hands, looked and smiled and gave assurances even to the lowest in rank. Only to the impersonalists, who do not recognize Him, does the Lord not reciprocate. Elderly <em>brahmanas</em> chanted His glories and became glorified themselves. The ladies from the respectable houses of Dvaraka went up to the roofs of the houses just to have a look at the Lord.</p>
<p>Within the five mellows or <em>rasas</em> the Lord responds differently with His devotees. One can have an eternal relationship with the Lord as a servant, friend, parent or conjugal lover, and the Lord reciprocates with each differently. But each one is absolute in their complete devotion to the Lord, and He deals with them in affection accordingly.</p>
